So we bought the 60 gig PS3 when it first came out. After a while it stopped playing PS3 games and blu ray movies (still played PS2 games and DVDs).

Past warranty, just bought a PS3 slim instead of sending it to Sony for repair.

I saw last week that the blue ray lasers are like $30. Ordered one and installed it.

Bingo, works. Been playing Dragon's Dogma on it all weekend.
 
Yeah, those classic PS3s are worth their weight in gold. I'm never giving mine up. :)
 
My story above excludes the fact that I tried to put it in Friday night on two nights in a row of four hours of sleep, and things went horrible. I had a disc in the drive, which comlpicated things greatly. I managed to shoot gears from the insertion drive all over the floor, and finally gave up that night and looked at it again the next day with fresh eyes and better light. In the end, though, victory!

My original fat ps3 got KO'd by Demons Souls ironically enough. It would still read ps2/ps1 discs but not ps3. I eventually ended up buying a slim ps3 but I still have it in a closet somewhere.
 
If you install a new laser, remove any discs first!

I was going along with a youtube video on disassembling to access the laser. 80% through the ****er says "Oh, yeah, be sure to have taken any discs out." We were already taking the drive apart at that point!

These videos then saved my ass.
